There is a new pinot grigio in town -- Solemar.
Packaged in an eye-catching blue bottle, Solemar Pinot Grigio 2006 is sure to make a splash. It is the inaugural wine brand of Ben E. Keith Beverage Distributors.
In a press release, company president Kevin Bartholomew said, "We are introducing Solemar as our first wine brand because we wanted to offer our Texas customers an authentic Northern Italian Pinot Grigio at a value-directed price of around $7.99 a bottle and $5 a glass. We see it as an exceptional buy for a wine of this origin and quality."
Solemar does indeed provide outstanding quality for the price.
It has more flavor than most pinot grigios in this category, with classic lime and pear characteristics, and a floral hint on the crisp dry finish.
This refreshing wine is tasty on its own and is intended to be paired with salads, seafood and other light fare.
However, I happened to sample it with a hearty pasta dish spiced with red pepper and Italian sausage. The pairing worked just fine, showing the wine's versatility.
Solemar, which means "sun and sea," is produced at the 79-year-old Casa Vinicola Botter. This family-run winery is located in prime pinot grigio territory, in northern Italy near Venice.
If you do not typically drink pinot grigio, give it a try. This light and aromatic white wine is gaining converts across the United States, where it is almost as popular as white zinfandel.
